I was unfamiliar with the character of Deadpool before I played this. He is a newer Marvel comic book character first appearing in 1991 known as the 'Merc with a Mouth.' Although somewhat lowbrow, this makes for a humorous game with it being one of the more straight comedic games I've played. At its heart it is a slash 'em up/third person shooter, with the former being what you will probably choose to do more of, however different situations require different strategies. There are also some platforming and a couple of minor puzzle aspects to the game as well. There is also some stealth implemented, although not perfectly constructed, that I would have liked to see more of, particularly the choice to get through parts of levels this way. The graphics aren't brilliant, but for a comic book game like this they suit the game and are aesthetically pleasing. The voice acting of Deadpool and co-that include appearances from Wolverine, Rogue, Death, Cable-and references to other X-Men-are excellent as we come to expect from video games these days. I played this on the medium difficulty, and by the end I was more so playing it to finish it rather than for enjoyment, as the final battles take forever and were quite difficult requiring a number of retries and computer mouses being smashed. The problem is, that Deadpool's health regenerates after a short time of not being damaged, but this becomes part of the gameplay. When you take some damage you will end up attempting to run away from the action for a while waiting for the health to fill up. This becomes particularly annoying when battling numerous enemies at once. Health-regeneration isn't uncommon in games but with no where to duck and hide I spent too much time sprinting away from enemies for my liking. If you like the genre I've described and are in for some laughs you could do worse than play this. The humour and plot no doubt kept me interested longer than the gameplay itself.
