Cliff Starkey is a bowls player whose presence on the sacred greens of Torquay doesn't see him welcomed with open arms: punk hair, scruffy clothes and his bowls carried in carrier bag. He is brilliant at his chosen sport, however, and soon acquires an American agent who propels his protégé into the big time. Fame has its price; along the way Starkey risks losing both his best mate Trev and girlfriend Kerry.
