In this surreal movie, Spanish director Julio Medem (Sex and Lucia) creates a tale of an innocent girl’s transformation into a worldly woman. Naive, radiant, 18-year-old Ana (Manuela Vellés) lives with her father on a Spanish island, Ibiza, in a candle-lit cave which she has decorated with her art. She earns money by selling her primitive, colorful paintings on the island. One day, a patron of the arts, Justine (Charlote Rampling), recognizing Ana’s talent, convinces her to move to Madrid, where she enters art school and lives in an old house with other art students, including her new friend Linda and a young Arab man from the Sahara, Said. Ana falls in love and has her first sex with Said, but her relationship with him does not last. Without warning, Said just disappears from her life. In Madrid, Ana is hypnotized for the first time. Through hypnosis, she is able to go back in time, seeing her many past lives and deaths in various places in the world. Eventually, she is able to use the knowledge she gained through hypnosis in travelling from Europe through New York to the Southwestern United States.
