The main characters of the "Night Shift" police film series are four officers from the night shift occupation of the permanent criminal investigation service (KDD) in Hamburg: Chief Inspector Erich Bo Erichsen, Chief Inspector Paula Bloom, Inspector Mimi Hu and police officer Teddy Schrader. In the night shift team, Erichsen is the experienced but somewhat dodgy street cop, while Bloom is the sensitive and tough police psychologist. The two newcomers Schrader and Hu represent the young generation in the police force.
