The series revolves around the Vienna shipping police (sea and river police). While SOKO Kitzbühel deals exclusively with Alpine cases, Vienna SOKO is responsible for investigating crimes on the Danube and its tributaries. Not just – as the ZDF title might suggest – in the Austrian capital, but also in Lower and Upper Austria, as well as in neighboring countries to the east. For example, the Donaucops were already active in Bratislava and arrested one or two Hungarian or Russian crooks. In contrast to the other SOKO series, it is presented in a much more modernized way, and in this case the forensics also have a slightly higher priority.
