Englebert Ames (Anthony Heald), an avid astronomer, uses an antique telescope contained within his house to view the coming of Halley's Comet. When the comet passes, he and his henpecking wife Charlene (Kate McGregor-Stewart) receive unexpected guests: Lara Burns (Sarah Rush), a woman from 1910 (the previous year the comet was sighted), and Sir Edmond Halley (Fritz Weaver) himself.
