Still hate the “real world” actors, they are so terrible in their acting and their dialogue and even the overall premise. Also fuck this movie for making the whole set up to move the plot along be Spencer having heavily implied problems with his mental health and then making his unhealthy decision- escaping it be the thing that ends up cheering him up in the end. Why even go over that topic if you’re not even gonna explore it? Anyway, I digress. As with the first Jumanji, (or second? It’s confusing to say), The Rock And Kevin Hart are fantastic and their chemistry bounces off the screen. Danny DeVito is great, but that’s implied by it being Danny DeVito. The villain is terrible but that’s not an issue because he’s not really important at all. He’s more like an obstacle in the way of the mcguffin, and he’s meant to be. Same with last time, I feel like the only person who thinks the CGI is not only passable, but pretty great. The action scenes are pretty good, even if one half are taken directly from the first and a quarter are taken from the last quarter that does original action. The pattern of my major problem with the movie applies to the first as well: cringe and eye rolling moments. There are heaps of cringe moments: the aforementioned real world characters, the dialogue when it isn’t comedy involved tends to be pretty bad, even the intentionally emotional moments made me roll my eyes because of the dialogue. Also, there’s a moment where Fridge pulls out a boom box and plays the Martha dancefighting song from the first, and I rolled my eyes for three reasons; 1. It was needless, b: I don’t like the song tbh, and thirdly it just made me think “Couldn’t they get the rights for a different song?” It’s not like they’re going for nostalgia or something, so why the same song? Just moments like these are sprinkled heavily along the movie and it’s jarring. Despite this, I think it’s a very fun watch because of the action, comedy, and the few good actors who do all of the heavy lifting for the rest, and succeed gloriously.
