"The Creepy Man" is a 1981 psychological horror film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick and written by Kubrick and Andrew Birkin, and stars Natalie Splavec, Jon Voight, Rita Hayworth, Meryl Streep, Bob Saget, and Gary Coleman. David Kurtz (Jon Voight), an alcoholic who abuses his wife and daughter. Janet Kurtz (Rita Hayworth), an overprotective mother who frequently keeps track of her daughter. Main protagonist Stan Kurtz (Natalie Splavec), a 9-year old who dreams about nightmares and is afraid to sleep in the dark. Olivia Garrison (Meryl Streep), is the housekeeper of the Kurtzs and keeps track of things. Daniel Garrison (Bob Sagat), is the husband of Olivia who has been at war with David for many years because he believes that David is abusing his family. Kevin Anderson (Gary Coleman), is the Kurtz neighbor and best friend of Stan.
The film starts with David and his family driving from Denver to their home in Balltown, Iowa. On the way back to Denver, they pass a sign which says "Balltown—3 miles". It cuts to David and the family walked to their house with their suitcases, Janet looks around the place but there are no lights on. They open the door to find it's very cold inside as if no one lives there anymore. At night, while everyone was sleeping, Stan heard a noise coming from her closet so she went to look and saw someone wearing a black hood. She screamed and woke up everybody else. David and Janet walked into Stan's room to check what happened, Stan told them that someone was trying to scare her but then they saw nothing. Janet told Stan to go back to sleep, however Stan cannot get back to sleep because she has seen the person again. When Stan goes out to play with her friend, Kevin. David tells her not to leave the yard or go anywhere near the woods because there might be something bad in those woods. Stan agreed. Stan and Kevin played ball in the backyard until they got hungry. Stan accidentally threw the ball in the woods so when he went to retrieve the ball, she saw an old man sitting under a tree. The old man started talking to Stan and told her that he came here as a boy but was too young to remember anything. Stan got scared and ran away from the old man, she took a running jump and landed on a stump. She looked around but couldn't see anyone. Stan ran to her friend Kevin and asked if he could stay at his house instead. David was furious with Stan for leaving the house and going to his friend's house. Janet tried to talk David out of being angry with Stan but David wouldn't listen. David started to beat up Stan in front of Kevin. Stan's face was bloodied and she had bruises all over her body. David continued to hit Stan even harder. Janet kept begging David to stop beating up her daughter. Stan started to cry and begged her dad to stop hurting her.
