This one kept me engaged from start to finish. It has an original enough premise and execution, which is not something I often say about the current state of film. It keeps the viewer guessing and maintains a sense of tension around how everything will play out. The performances from the leads are excellent, with Chris Pratt as Detective Chris Raven delivering solid work, and Rebecca Ferguson in particular standing out as the AI judge. My main issue is that the ending feels somewhat rushed. Spoilers ahead. Chris’s partner is revealed to be a corrupt cop who was responsible for an innocent person being executed under the AI judicial system, and this major revelation is wrapped up in the space of a few minutes. It feels like an idea that deserved more time to breathe. Despite what some reviewers claim, this is not a pro AI film. The message is clearly that the justice system requires a human element, a point that is emphasised throughout the entire movie and driven home with the revelation that the system is executing innocent people. Another criticism I saw gave the film a poor rating because it did not explicitly state that homeless internment camps (that are featured in the movie for 30 seconds) "are bad", which is frankly incredible.
