The plot is basically about a surfer who is fiending for a wave, intertwined into something about getting offers to be a part of reality television and a surfing video game. It's all incohesive and feels all over the place. Many of the male characters are your stereotypical surfers, carrying a stoner accent, and with nothing on their minds other than bludging, riding a wave, chicks and blazing a joint. The best thing about this is some of the cinematography and the picturesque images. It was also a plus not seeing a lot of actual surfing taking place as I find it to be a boring sport. 1.5-2/5
A fairly stock standard cop/buddy flick with one strong experienced cop and the other a rookie of sorts. There are some laughs though and Kevin Hart and Cube work alright together. Apart from trying to be comedic, Ramon, the kid Hart stops on the football field from going to drink instead of going to class, seemed to be pointless as it went nowhere at all. The 'racism' that seems okay if coloured actors are doing it is still okay for some reason. One or two scenes went too long and are predictable as well. 2.5-2/5
Firstly, this doesn't seem like something Louis C.K. would do. I guess his comedy may have changed a bit over the years. Secondly, Lance Crouther as Pootie Tang never seemed like a good fit. It's not surprising he hasn't acted a lot elsewhere. Not a terrible comedy though. Particular highlights are the guy who always repeats what JB says, J.B. Smoove's delivery of the narration and 46 minutes into the film when as the narrator he says exactly what he is about to say in the movie. 2.5-3/5
I watched this based on the high rating it has on another site. The Letterboxd rating is less extreme. Was I surprised and underwhelmed!
The girlfriend of one of the rivals of the lead character gets her hair lit on fire accidentally at the start of a drag race between the two. Then we get useless confrontation after useless confrontation inspired by vengeance between the two until a climax about 80 minutes in. And the lead character 'Dude' is such a badass isn't he? As unlikable as leads get. It kind of goes into some history with his father to explain what's going on, but in no great depth at all. It also tries to be suave and cool with music playing in the background all the time, but I just didn't think it pulled it off at all. There's little to like in anyone on the screen minus Selma, but again, she's with this fool. Goes nowhere.
This had me hooked straight away. By the second hour towards its conclusion the main character's ADHD, manic depressive-like personality begins to get tiresome as do many of the other unstable annoyances of most of the other characters. The relationships and quick to screw anything weren't surrounded by much reality. Still enjoyable though.
