This was one of the first albums I ever bought as a kid and it could have possibly been the first CD...I can't remember exactly...anyway, I think the main reason I wanted Bad so bad was because of 'Smooth Criminal' which I love to this day and never weary of. How turnt up is the part after, "Okay, I want everybody to clear the area right now!"? It goes off! These days now that I have a lot more of MJ's catalogue and music as a whole, some of the songs don't hold the same feelings for me as they once did. I do enjoy everything from the ferocious 'Speed Demon' to the love ballad in 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You', but it's the songs listed below that really work for me making the back end of the album stronger than the first. I must say as well, I do find two of the commercially bigger songs from this, the title track and 'The Way You Make Me Feel' a tad overrated. They are still great infectious pop songs though. While thematically it's more all over the place musically than most of his other projects, overall it was a great way to backup 'Thriller'. Best Tracks: Man in the Mirror, Dirty Diana, Smooth Criminal, Leave Me Alone (perhaps the first we see of Michael's frustration at the media)

MJ's other albums do some of what this does better. The ballads are better on 'Off the Wall'. Songs like 'Rock With You' and 'It's the Falling in Love' are better than 'The Lady in My Life'. The duet 'Just Good Friends' from 'Bad' is stronger than 'The Girl Is Mine'. 'Dangerous' has more tracks that I love and the aforementioned 'Off the Wall' is a more consistently great album, and arguably Michael's most well rounded from his discography. But this is Thriller! The opener is brilliant and feels like it would have almost fitted in place of 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough'. 'Beat It' and 'Billie Jean' are worldwide hits that go hard no matter how many times they're heard. 'Thriller' has had a massive pop-culture impact, partly due to its video, but as a song, I don't rate it near MJ's best and it is overrated. I do find that to be the case with some of MJ's most popular singles though. 'Bad', 'Black or White', 'The Way You Make Me Feel' and 'Scream' being others. 'Human Nature' and 'P.Y.T.' on the other hand, are extremely underrated. The vocal harmony just after the 2-minute mark and near the conclusion on 'Human Nature' are enough to make it a favourite and 'P.Y.T.' is fire all the way through, but its strength is its contagious chorus. I like the other weaker songs that I mentioned earlier, like 'Baby Be Mine', but it feels like it's about to kick into the 'P.Y.T.' chorus at times with its similar progression and doesn't quite elevate itself to the level of the other songs. 'The Girl Is Mine' is the most disliked song by the populous but the only part I really don't like is the talking at the end. And as mentioned, the closer doesn't live up to many of MJ's other ballads but is still an excellent tune. Side B is no doubt stronger here. It's not perfect, and again, as mentioned, MJ did some things better on other albums but the best are extraordinary songs and there are enough of them to five star this. For any massive MJ fan it is difficult to pick an album as your favourite. From 'Off the Wall' they are all great albums each with their own standouts that stand up to this day. 'Dangerous' is no different, and it is my pick from his discography. I think the main reason is because of the new jack swing/hip hop production touches, which are among my genres of choice. 'Gone too Soon' aside, that is a bit slow, every track is a winner and the direction MJ took with this album makes it my favourite. 'Jam' is absolute fire and in my top few Mj songs of all time. It's a much better song than 'Black or White', that, while I still like, I find the guitar riff repetitive and it to be one of his more overrated singles. Some people are way too critical of this album. Most of the production is amazing, including the drums that on songs like the title track are hard as nails, and with Michael's vocals over the top...you can't go wrong. This is R. Kelly before he was a huge solo success and the album that led the way to the great '12 Play'. From reading R. Kelly's autobiography, he made this group because groups were the trend at the time but he does most of the work here. 'Born Into the 90's' is fairly similar to other early '90s R&B/New jack swing groups but has a fair bit of rapping in it and while all songs ain't great the best work well. *The grammatical error in the title annoys me. Best Tracks: She's Loving Me, She's Got That Vibe, Slow Dance (Hey Mr. DJ)
