As usual, X starts off an album intensely with 'Invade My Space' but then you have to wait about five tracks until another top track in 'Concentrate' appears, and then the other best track is only two songs away in 'Family Values'. The rest are all listenable and good to average but there are only really three songs that I may play again which is a disappointment, and a drop from his last LP 'Weapons of Mass Destruction'. X can create some amazing tracks but on this LP he creates way too many average ones to be a real winner.
Best Tracks: Invade My Space, Concentrate, Family Values.
I think people expected way too much from this. That's the only thing to explain the misleading poor reputation this has everywhere. While there is no 'Still D.R.E.' here or a truly fantastic song, there is also nothing bad and it's a consistent compilation with a strong tail, that contains a number of R&B songs that probably have a higher success rate for me than the rap songs. IDK. I like it...
Best Tracks: East Coast / West Coast Killas, As the World Keeps Turning, Sexy Dance, L.A.W. (Lyrical Assault Weapon), Nationowl
This could use more Scarface with many featurings throughout the thirty-eight minute duration, but overall I really enjoy this. There are good hard beats, some with a bit of a Soulful/Jazzy vibe like 'Picking Up the Pieces' which Scarface sounds great over, and you never feel the need to hit the skip button. If his awaited upcoming album is similar to this with some more Face I'll be more than satisfied given it's 2010.
Best Tracks: Picking Up The Pieces, Lyrical Assault, Get Lost, The N Word, The Ghetto Report, 2 The Beat, Hustle Game
Despite not being a massive fan of early hip hop beats, most of these are funkily pretty good and despite it lyrically being very much shoot, kill, murder etc, none do that kind of rap better than Scarface did.
"Hell I don't give a fuck about no witnesses / Witness this" - 'gunshot'
Track for track, for me it's one of those fairly consistent records (drops off a touch toward the end though). In saying that though, while there are some great songs like the ones mentioned below, there is nothing amazing. If you love 1990-1991 beats though I can understand absolutely loving this record, but for more Scarface check out 'The Diary' and 'The Fix' for better later production. 3.5-4/5
Best Tracks: Mr. Scarface, Born Killer, Your Ass Got Took, Body Snatchers
From the great 'Scarface' themed instrumental intro you know you are in for some fun from Scarface, and he provides one of the better hip hop albums, and yep, it's from 1994. Scarface has always told graphic/violent stories well and some of these tracks definitely add to that such as 'The White Sheet' and' Jesse James'. It's not all gangster rap though with a great introspective type of track in 'I Seen a Man Die' which Z-Ro did a version of years later on 'I'm Still Livin' titled 'Man Cry'. Some great production is here with many tracks having a funky vibe and with Scarface rapping over them who is one of my favs thanks to his distinctive style, and consistent discography. You can't go wrong.
