I'm a fan of Bruno Mars. That said, Doo-Wops & Hooligans is his worst album. The lyrics on this album range from creepy (Grenade, Runaway Baby) to stupid (The Lazy Song, Our First Time) to cloying (Just the Way You Are, Count on Me). The first half of this album was especially difficult to sit through, with Bruno not even managing to have good instrumentation on the cod reggae influenced Our First Time and The Lazy Song. The others are okay musically, even if they don't do much for me personally. However, the lyrics drag them down significantly. The second half, with the exception of Count on Me is an improvement. Marry Me and The Other Side, while nothing special, are decent pop songs, and I actually loved Liquor Store Blues. That was an actually good reggae song, much to my surprise. As for Talking to the Moon, it's boring.
Flo Rida is the definition of a disposable artist. His lyrics are generic club cliches, his music is generic club music, and, most importantly, he has no personality. The title of this album is also quite accurate. He really does have only one flow. If you just want fun club music, there's way better out there than this *cough*Kesha*cough*. Mainly because, while artists like Kesha have beats that still sound good today, Flo Rida's beats have aged horribly. Some of these synths grate on my eardrums. Also, there's the pseudo-trap song featuring Gucci Mane at the end. I like Gucci, but he should've said no to this. The one okay song on here is Club Can't Handle Me, which is an okay dance song. Everything else can and should be skipped.
This isn't the worst thing Lil Wayne has ever done. Right Above It is catchy and fun, and Bill Gates has a surprisingly beautiful melody and introspective lyrics. Other than that, I'm not a fan. A lot of the beats sound really dated, some of the wordplay is just plain gross, the love songs are not convincing in the slightest, and I'm Single makes my skin crawl. It's not a good album, but at least he's not trying to do rock music this time.
I've always hated Like a G6. It's annoying, it's trashy, and it doesn't have the groove to be any fun. However, after listening to this album, I think it's not even the worst song on here. On pretty much all of these songs, the rappers have no personality other than being lame guys trying and failing to sound cool. The production is incredibly dated, to the point that even She Owns the Night, which could've been the best song here, manages to grate on my eardrums. There are other moment when they try to be serious or romantic. It just comes off as infuriatingly insincere, not to mention boring. In fact, if you add the word annoying to that list, that's how I'd describe this entire album.
As a rock fan, I had hopes that this could be good. It is not. Sure, some of the instrumentation is decent, such as the heavy guitars on The Price is Wrong, the more melodic sound of Knockout, and the bouncy drums on Get a Life. However, even songs that could've been good get ruined by Lil Wayne's terrible autotuned singing. Also, the lyrics on this album suck. There are multiple songs on here where bad boy player Lil Wayne complains about getting his heart broken, and it feels really insincere. Then there are the songs where Lil Wayne talks about standard rap cliches over rock instrumentation. The only decent song on here is Drop the World, but even that gets hurt a bit by Lil Wayne's basic flow. Everyone pray that Wayne never makes a rock album again.
